Women-Owned Business (WOB) in the United States:
  • 10.1 million firms are owned by women (50% or more), employing more than 13 million people, and generating $1.9 trillion in sales as of 2008. 
  • Three quarters of all women-owned businesses are majority owned by women (51% or more), for a total of 7.2 million firms, employing 7.3 million people, and generating $1.1 trillion in sales. 
  • Women-owned firms (50% or more) account for 40% of all privately held firms. One in five firms with revenue of $1 million or more is woman-owned. 
  • 3% of all women-owned firms have revenues of $1 million or more compared with 6% of men-owned firms.

  • There are 79,109 Women-Owned Businesses in North Carolina.
  • There are 41,568 WOB in the Raleigh region
NAWBO Member Profile
  • Business size: Businesses owned by NAWBO members are larger than the average women-owned business in terms of numbers and employees. 16 percent employ more than eleven people. 
  • Revenue: 25 percent of NAWBO members make over $1 million in annual sales; 42 percent make over $250K. 
  • Years in business: NAWBO members have owned their business for an average of 9.7 years. 
  • Industry: Professional, scientific, and technical services is the industry that captures the highest percentage of the NAWBO members at 21.7 percent. 
  • Access to capital: To meet their capital needs, NAWBO members utilize business credit cards and personal credit cards. 23 percent of all women-owned firms find capital in personal family savings. 
  • Technology: 83 percent indicate the use of a business Web site in 2008; up dramatically in the last 10 years. 
  • Membership value: The three main wants and needs of NAWBO members are making business connections, obtaining education and training, and access to health insurance. 
  • Education: Generally, NAWBO members are very well educated with 39 percent holding post-graduate degrees.
